Klaassen was born on February 21, 1993, in Hilversum. He followed the youth academy in Amsterdam and made his debut on November 22, 2011, in the UEFA Champions League match Olympique Lyon - Ajax: 0-0. After the 2016/2017 season, in which Klaassen reached the final of the UEFA Europa League with Ajax, he left for the English Everton. Between 2018 and 2020, the midfielder played for Werder Bremen, returning to Ajax two years later.
Divided into two periods, Klaassen played 321 matches for the first team and made 93 goals and 50 assists. Klaassen also won the Eredivisie five times (2012, 2013, 2014, 2021 and 2022) with Ajax. Besides that, he won the Johan Cruijff Shield in 2013 and the Dutch Cup in 2021. He was crowned Football Player of the Year in 2016.
