Ajax brings team of twenty players to Lisbon

A new adventure awaits Ajax in the UEFA Champions League. Erik ten Hag's Ajax players traveled to Portugal on Tuesday for the opening game against Sporting CP, set for Wednesday night. Ten Hag has selected twenty Ajax players for the first Champions League match in 2021/2022.

Davy Klaassen is not one of them. The Dutchman is not yet fit after having been injured during the international break. Maarten Stekelenburg, who had to miss the match against PEC Zwolle on Saturday, is in the team for the Champions League on Wednesday. Nico Tagliafico and Lisandro Martínez also return to Ten Hag’s squad.

At 21.00 CET on Wednesday, Ajax will play their first match of the group stage. The first home match is set for just less than two weeks later. The Turkish side, Besiktas, will be the opponent in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Tuesday, September 28th. Borussia Dortmund is Ajax's third opponent in group C in the Champions League.
