Ajax ends season with a draw against Vitesse

Ajax concluded the season with a draw in Arnhem. Brian Brobbey put the Ajax team in the lead, but Openda scored twice early on in the second half. An Edson Álvarez header moved the scoreboard to 2-2 in the final stages of the match.

For the match against Vitesse, manager Erik ten Hag made four changes to the team compared with the championship final against sc Heerenveen. This meant that Maarten Stekelenburg and Davy Klaassen took up their positions on the bench. Noussair Mazraoui and Jurriën Timber were not included in the match selection. Instead, Jay Gorter, Devyne Rensch, Youri Regeer and Brobbey made their apperance in the starting squad. For the 21-year-old goalie, this was his squad debut in the Eredivisie for the Ajax 1st team.

After celebrating the 36th national title last Wednesday, Ajax made a strong start in Arnhem and took the lead 1-0 via Brian Brobbey. The first half was absolutely perfect for the Amsterdam team.

That changed after half time. Vitesse forward Loïs Openda scored twice in quick succession. This meant that Ajax were playing catch-up. Ajax hit the bar three times in Arnhem in an attempt to get an equaliser on the board.

In the final stages Álvarez finally managed to score. He protected Ajax against suffering a defeat. The team of Ten Hag, who was on the sidelines during his last match as the Ajax manager, finished the season with 83 points from 34 matches.
