Ajax started the game moderately in Waalwijk. The Ajax players had two big attacking chances early in the match. A good save from Pasveer and an offside goal kept it 0-0. Around 10 minutes later, Ajax took the lead. Berghuis put the ball from Jurriën Timber delightfully deep with the outside of his foot. The Ajax defender in turn played the ball to Steven Bergwijn. The Ajax striker sent the ball back to Berghuis, who shot it hard through the legs of an RKC defender and into the net: 0-1.
A minute after the goal from Berghuis, Klaassen had a huge chance to double the lead. Klaassen failed to capitalise on this chance, before RKC managed to find the net at the other end. Ex-Ajax player Clement shot the 1-1 into the net from close range from Kramer's cross. Little happened in Waalwijk until half-time, leaving the Ajax players to go into the dressing room with the score tied.
Ajax came out of the dressing room tremendously strong. Within ten minutes in the second half, this produced another lead for Ajax: 1-2. Berghuis blasted the ball hard against the net from outside the penalty area, scoring his second goal of the match. Brobbey also appeared on the scoreboard, the Ajax striker cementing his place in the starting squad with two goals. He coolly shot the 1-3 and 1-4 into the net.
