Ajax got off to a strong start at the Allianz Arena, taking the lead after just ten minutes thanks to Labyad. The second part of the first half was all Bayern's, who just got into the game far better. Goalkeeper Remko Pasveer twice prevented the other team drawing level, but eventually had to let one past in the fortieth minute, from Choupo Moting.
Right on the half-time whistle, things appeared to be about to go 2-1 to Bayern for one very strange moment. Dutchman Zirkzee had broken through and thought he could simply walk the ball into an empty net at his leisure. However, he did not take Perr Schuurs into account, who in a fantastic tackle knocked the ball clean away from under the feet of his fellow countryman.
Soon after half time, 2-1 did finally make it onto the scoreboard. Upamecano's header in the 48th minute initially hit the crossbar, but the attack continued and it was tipped in by Nianzou. The Ajax team showed resilience, however, and came straight back with their reply. Jensen scored from a lovely cross in one strike: 2-2. The Dane was one of three subs brought on after tea.
Eventually, new signing Berghuis was allowed on for half an hour. At one point he came close to scoring his first goal for Ajax. However, his shot at goal was tipped out of harm's way by Bayern goalkeeper Ulreich.
