Ajax had a number of great combinations in the first part of the match, regularly found openings via Daley Blind and had an offensive left back in Wijndal who regularly popped up in the penalty area of the Ukrainians. Early on, Ajax had a number of smaller chances, but the most dangerous ones were for the visitors.
Pasveer came out on top twice, but in the 33rd minute it was Mudryk who outwitted the Ajax keeper at the near post and put Shakhtar up 0-1. On possession, it may have seemed against the run of play, but it was the third serious chance for the Ukrainians.
On the stroke of half-time, Ajax equalized. From what appeared to be an offside position, Tadic tapped in the 1-1 after a cross from Davy Klaassen.
The home side started strong in the second half. A header from Timber hit the post and after that the Ajax players also regularly created chances, without finishing them.
Just more than fifteen minutes before the final whistle. Ajax did take the lead. Steven Berghuis had a stroke of luck as his shot was deflected and flew into the goal behind Pyatov.
