Along with Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Barcelona, Sporting CP, RB Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sevilla and Juventus advance to the Europa League from Europe's top tournament. All teams coming from the Champions League will play an intermediate round against the eight runners-up from the Europa League.
Possible opponents
They were announced after the final round of matches on Thursday night:
- Stade Rennes
- FC Nantes
- AS Monaco
- AS Roma
- Union Berlin
- Manchester United
- FC Midtjylland
At this stage of the tournament, teams from the same country cannot draw each other. This means Ajax cannot face PSV, who finished second in their pool in the Europa League.
The playing dates for the intermediate round are also already fixed: Thursday, 16 February 2023, and one week later, on Thursday, 23 February. The draw for the Europa League intermediate round will take place on Monday afternoon from 13:00 in Nyon.
The eight winners of the intermediate round will qualify for the Europa League quarter finals and join the eight group winners of Europe's second tournament.
