Ajax ended the first match in the UEFA Europea league group stage with a 3-3 draw against Olympique Marseille. Carlos Forbs, Steven Berghuis and Kenneth Taylor scored on behalf of the Amsterdam-based team. Steijn briefly rewatched the match on Thursday night. "My analysis after the match was right. We made a lot of great attacks and had many shots at goal. But we were also messy on the ball, which created a lot of space. We have to do better on Sunday", the Ajax coach said.
According to Steijn, there are more than enough starting points after Thursday’s match. "I've seen passion and fight. But I won't look away from the chances we gave away. There were moments in which we were very messy. You can see that we lack alignment sometimes due to inexperience. We are working hard to make progress and to get the boys ready for Sunday."
Klassieker
The coach from the Hague wants to play a good match against Feyenoord. "I think the draw against Olympique Marseille gave us a confidence boost ahead of Sunday. The ball speed in the back needs to increase to hurt Feyenoord. Furthermore, we must create depth behind the defense and play with bravado. I feel confident in this team."
Steijn is aware of the fact that Feyenoord is a tough opponent. "They have a clear way of playing and scored many goals over the last few weeks. We have to arm ourselves for that. The Klassieker is a battle in itself, and I hope my team can rise above themselves. We will aim for a victory. We play at home, and the supporters will take us to great heights."
