Ajax had a slow start to the match, which provided PEC Zwolle with an excellent opportunity within the first minute. A strong first move from the Zwolle team was headed over Maarten Stekelenburg's goal to the great relief of Amsterdam fans.
After this nail-biting moment, the thumb screws were applied and Ajax ramped up the pressure on the Zwolle defence. The Ajax players probed PEC's defensive armour, but without finding any major opportunities.
Beautiful goal from Tadic
In the thirtieth minute, Ajax finally eventually succeeded in cracking the defence of Dick Schreuder's team. Tadic was sent deep by Kenneth Taylor and delivered a perfect volley behind ex-Ajax keeper Lamprou: 1-0.
Shortly after the opening goal from the Serbian captain, Ajax had a narrow escape. A well-aimed pass from Clement was shot close over the top of the Amsterdam goal by Redan. The Ajax team was unable to double their lead before half time, leaving Ten Hag's team to return to the dressing room with a 1-0 advantage.
Klaassen doubles lead
Compared with the first half, Ajax made a much stronger start in the second half. This resulted in them going 2-0 up in the fifitieth minute. After a good pass from Tadic, Jurriën Timber popped up in the PEC Zwolle penalty area, hitting the post. The rebound left Klaassen to tap in his eight match goal of the season into an open goal.
Regeer was replaced by Devyne Rensch in the 66th minute. The nineteen-year-old defender got his first match minutes again since 11th March in the Ajax first team. Shortly after coming onto the pitch Rensch initiated a great opportunity. He came through along the right wing and played the ball to Tadic. The Serbian provided Sébastien Haller with a perfect opportunity to bring the score to 3-0, but the Ivorian player shot the ball high over the goal from close range.
Fantastic goal from Klaassen
3-0 appeared on the scoreboard in the 81st minute. Klaassen dribbled from midfield towards the goal of PEC keeper Lamprou. The 29-year-old midfielder made contact and struck the ball perfectly with the inside of his foot, sending it into the net.
